What is Meditation? How does it Affect our Brain Scientifically?

When we were a kid, many of our parents should have asked us to start meditation. But most of us thought that meditation is not for us, and we gave up. But as we grow up, we hear about meditation from all over, on TV, radio, internet, newspaper, and even from a lot of our friends that how meditation benefits. From various sources, we hear of different benefits from meditation.

In this blog, I’m trying to accumulate all the benefits one can get by meditation so that from one source you can know about all the benefits.

I feel the best benefits one can get from meditation is happiness for day to day. The lookout to the world changes and a lot of complex thoughts straighten up when you meditate. We will go to other benefits later on this blog.

To start meditation, you don’t have to worry about age, start it at any point in your life. The first few days you mightn’t be able to concentrate. So, as said start with small things and then make your target larger. Start practicing meditation for two minutes a day; two minutes won’t take away anything from anyone’s life. Then you can increase the length to the availability of your time. You can also start from any classes, such as meditation classes in Bangalore.

So, what is meditation?

You can meditate in different ways, and it is an extremely personal practice. Meditation is done either by focused attention or mindful meditation.

  • Focused-attention: You are supposed to focus on a specific thing, it could be anything, such as breathing, your body sensation, or any object outside your body. The reason to meditate this way is to focus to a point, and when your mind wanders, you concentrate your mind again to that point.
  • Mindful attention: This type of meditation is also called open monitoring meditation. In this type of meditation, you are to pay attention to everything happening around you, but you react to nothing.

How Brain Reacts When You Meditate?

The technologies now can determine the condition on your brain more thoroughly with the help of fMRI.

While meditating, it is seen that the brain’s information processing stops as it does when not meditating. Let’s check the brain part-by-part:

  • Frontal Lobe

The frontal lobe is where information is reasoned and planned. This is frontal lobe that gets the self-conscious awareness in a person. It is where people feel emotional. So, the frontal lobe is the part of the brain that is highly evolved. During medication, the frontal cortex seems like gone offline.

  • Parietal Lobe: The brain’s part that processes your orientation with time and space, surrounding world, and this type of sensory information is the parietal lobe. The activity of parietal lobe slows down while meditating.
  • Thalamus: Thalamus is also called as the gatekeeper of senses. Through thalamus sensory data goes deeper inside your brain and it stops the other unwanted signals right there. While meditation, incoming information’s flow is reduced to very small.
  • Reticular Formation: Incoming stimuli are received through this structure, and thus the brain becomes alert and responds to a situation. When you meditate, the function of this part of the brain also gets reduced.

So, what are the Effects of Meditation on Us?

So, we now know what happens inside our brain while meditating, let us see what the effects on us are:

Increase of Focus

When you meditate, you try to bring back your focus back to the point of focus, and so even when you are not meditating, you will have the ability to bring your brain back to your focus point. This effect you can only achieve after regular medications

Reduced Anxiety

The more you meditate, the less anxious you get. You can feel actually see a storm passing around you, rather than reacting anxiously to it. So, you will know how it is passing you by and when the perfect time you need to react.

Better Memory

People who meditate can adjust their brainwave such that distractions get screened out and their productivity increases. This is the reason that they can remember things rapidly.

Stress Control

When a person meditates, even under a pressured situation, they will feel less stress.
